New Beginnings
Crafted during a period of profound shifts and transformations, "Totem of Change" is a visual narrative capturing the essence of new beginnings. "New Beginnings" is a compilation of both ordinary and extraordinary moments that have punctuated my journey through change. At the heart of this collection lies the enigmatic presence of a small, white horse figurine—a timeless fixture in my family home. Its origin shrouded in mystery, it stands as a silent witness to the passage of time, a symbol of continuity amidst flux:
"Do you think about this white horse? I don't remember its story. It has always been there, But from where, I don't know."
Also gracing the canvas are the mesmerising formations of Brighton starlings, a mesmerizing amalgamation of local residents and migratory visitors from distant lands. United by the instinctual pull of community and the need for warmth and safety, these birds choreograph the sky with their synchronized flights and murmurations, a spectacle of both survival and joy:
"Brighton starlings are a mixture of a small number of birds that live locally and thousands which migrate from elsewhere in the UK and colder reaches of Eastern Europe. The first reason is strength by numbers, by gathering, flying, and roosting together starlings protect each other, both from predators and from the cold. Making shapes during the main murmuration at dusk. The science of murmurations is partly a survival mechanism, but also, they do it because they love it; the murmuration is a kind of dance. The shapes on protagonist chaps have forms inspired by my experience of seeing them fly with my eyes almost closed so they looked like shimmering stars."
On a Christmas Eve, which in Polish tradition is a very important part of the year and a sign of what will happen in the following year, we went for a walk in the Polish mountains and found a horseshoe - a piece of iron that is nailed to the underside of the hoof of a horse to protect the soft part of the foot from hard surfaces, commonly thought to be a token of good luck. As we were going through so much change, these findings filled us with a warm feeling of good energy guiding us to where we should be.
Each stroke of the brush, each hue on the canvas, serves as a testament to the beauty found in moments of transition, offering a glimpse into the ever-evolving tapestry of life.
